The future of this LiveJournal account

I don't even know if I have anyone who watches this LiveJournal account anymore, but if you do, you can clearly see that I haven't been keeping it up. For a while I had it set to crosspost from my main blog (www.demimonde.com) but for some reason, due to some bizarre CDN setting that I probably screwed up while in a drunken fog, the images either didn't port over right, or did, and then later got screwed up ... I have no idea. No interest in troubleshooting that dumb little bug. So forget it.

Which leaves me with this LiveJournal account that I haven't much use for. But then, it's a permanent account, which I paid like $150 or some ungodly amount for many, many years ago. So I wonder what I should do with it. Maybe I'll use LiveJournal as my SUPER SECRET HIDEOUT where I can post all sorts of secret stuff. Do they still let you change your username on LiveJournal? I wonder if I could go back to my original username. It would be like the circle unbroken and all that.

Ah, LiveJournal. We've seen so much, you and I. This is like a trip down memory lane. There's a beautiful simplicity to LiveJournal that I'd forgotten.

I always found LJ entries useful for to-do lists and the like. Anyway, how are you?

I am oversaturated with the social media. But I am seriously thinking that I could make this a fun secret club for myself. I would want to change my name, and my old username is no longer available, sadly.

How about you? Still livin' the good life?

A super secret club? Like the Justice League's satellite in Earth orbit?

There's a few of us still here. I crosspost from my website, but most of my readers are still here. (which only tells you about how few people read my website, but, hey.) :-)

I believe this is still Gail Carriger's primary blog platform, so that's got to count for something!

Nick Mamatas blogs here too. So, yeah, a few of the cool kids are still around. :-)

Still here, still reading, even post every so often (though nowadays I'm twinned here and on Dreamwidth). As with GEnie before it, I expect to be here till they turn out the lights.

D'oh, I totally forgot about my Dreamwidth account too! Oh brother. I have no idea what I'll do with that one either. But at least there I don't have the sunk cost like I do here. (And brother, I will do anything to avoid losing a sunk cost.) :-)

OK, I can't remember my LJ password right now (ruralwriter here), but I still read LiveJournal...and use it as an RSS reader, largely, more so now that Google Reader is going away.

Given that I also use a pseudonym here, I see the appeal of a hideout!

That's an interesting datapoint. Maybe I should continue to port my "major" posts from my blog over here (not the tiny little ones, but sometimes I do longer, more thoughtful ones) and then if I also want to use it as a secret hideout too. But having refreshed my memory on the rules, I can't change my name without losing rights to the old one, and I'd prefer not to lose rights to "mkhobson."

The interesting thing is that my old username (bricoleur) is still associated with this journal. If you type in "bricoleur.livejournal.com" (my old direct address) it brings you here.

I still look at it. I can't keep up with everyone's standalone pages, though increasingly I see notice of postings on FB, rather than here...

Hm, interesting. Part of revisiting my LiveJournal, etc. has to do with wanting to get *away* from Facebook (which has become so noisy and cluttered that it's getting really hard to use.) LJ is so much simpler and quieter. I've also been using G+ a lot more lately.

For that matter, I also have a Dreamwidth mirror that I should figure out what I want to do with ... sheesh!

I've often tried to go back to a conversation only to find it buried under a ton of "bubble game" notices that I haven't yet bothered myself to turn off.

Hi there! It's hard for me to remember to go over to other people's blogs, and for some reason FB buried you from my acct (so I actually went over to your page to get you -back- onto my FB feed....sheesh....it shouldn't be that hard!)

LJ is just a better format. It brings people's blogs to me, and doesn't decide for me which ones are my friends and which ones aren't....

I still look at my friend list fairly often, too, even though I don't post. I've been thinking about doing what you say. I like the friends-lock capability and the fact that neither my mom nor my m-i-l are on LJ. FB is getting too full.

That's the other thing I like about G+. I can swear and be raunchy over there without worrying about my MIL or SIL seeing it. Not that I'd think they'd really mind, but you know, sometimes it's nice to keep the perversion on the inside. :-)

Thank you for all the comments! So it looks like it's probably a good idea to continue to crosspost from my main site to my LiveJournal and Dreamwidth accounts. But now I have to figure out the best way to do that, given the way my site is set up. All my images are hosted on a CDN (Amazon S3) and if I use an autocrossposter, what happens is the post gets crossposted with the URL of the image *before* it is synched to the CDN. Once it's synched to the CDN, however, the URL changes, and then the image that WAS crossposted to LiveJournal is no longer valid.

This problem is solved if I don't use an automatic crossposter (if I actually go in and manually share the post after all the CDN-ification is complete) but I'm already manually sharing posts to Twitter, Facebook and G+ (not because of the CDN issue, BTW ... different problem) and honestly don't want to have to be logging in to two more sites every time I write a post ... even though I don't write that many posts.

I need a much better system here. If might involve some kind of tiering, like, "share to twitter, which shares to facebook, which shares to LJ". But man, that gets complex. If anyone has any advice, LMK.

There are a few of us still holding fort at LJ. I love the flist page and none of the other formats/blogs even come close to it, IMO. I can never remember to read individual blogs on a RSS reader -- so I don't. Don't leave LJ!!! :-D
