It is "flesh out." You "flesh" something out. You do not "flush" something out.

but then for some writers, they do need to flush out their stories, not flesh them out. (but not you!)

If the story comes to you as a jumble of potential plot points, scenes, characters, and settings, some of which will be in the final story, but many of which will not, then you have to flush it out.

My pet peeve is people using "jury rigged" for something cobbled together on the fly. Sorry, folks, it's "jerry rigged." "Jury rigged" is something you see in bad courtroom movies.

The one I hate is when people say "pitch-hitter" instead of "pinch-hitter".
Pinch-hitter - someone who comes to bat for you at the last minute.
Pitch-hitter - Barry Bonds.
Then there's "switch-hitter", which is altogether different. Unless it's "alltogether" different, which is surely someone else's pet peeve. Along with alot.
