Too uncool to play D&D!

So Gary Gygax died today. I'm seeing lots of posts on my fList about people remembering their D&D geekdom, and it made me flash back on my own grade school experiences.
See, I *wanted* to be a D&D geek. I thought the D&D geeks were neato. I aspired to be a D&D geek. I had my characters all thought out, I had their histories written, their pictures drawn, I was down with the sickness!
But I was a Fat Girl. Being a Fat Girl put me about on par, socially, with the kids who wore helmets and rode the short bus. The geeks wanted nothing to do with me. They mumbled and made excuses whenever I said I wanted to play. Yes, it's true. I was too uncool to play D&D.
But shed no tears for me, my friends; by the time I got into high school, I discovered the drama department, the fag-hag cradle from time immemorial, and everything worked out OK. ;-)
